Updating Firmware for FEIG RFID Readers

This page will cover the steps to update firmware for FEIG RFID Readers: CPR74 (HF) and LRU1002 (UHF) . These instructions assume you have a GlueLogix system with a Timing Control Unit (TCU) connected between the PC and the RFID Reader.  If your system is LineLogix Standalone, with no TCU, you can follow the instructions for Connecting to Reader Directly.

• On the GlueLogix laptop connected to your Rewind machine, open a LineLogixPC Job using the reader you want to update. Make sure it is a job with the parameter TCU Present = True.

• Check the reader tab and make note of which COM Port you are using. In the image above, we are using a CPR74 HF reader on COM Port 4.
• Read a tag to confirm you are communicating with the reader (through the TCU). You should see something like the following feedback:

• Repeat your tag read while removing and replacing the tag on the antenna. That verifies that the correct reader is active. The TCU is now lined up to the RFID reader you want to update.
  
• Close LineLogixPC and open the application FEIG ISOStart.
• Click the Detect button at the top of the screen.

• In the Detect a Reader window, do the following:
• Select COM-Port for communication interface
  
• Input the correct COM Port Number for your reader
  
• Click More button and check the box for DTR
• Input value 255 for BusAdr (Broadcast)
  
• Now click the Detect button. You should see your reader info pop up in the Reader Detection box.
• Click Run without change to connect to your reader.
• Now you are ready to update your firmware.
  

Connecting to the Reader Directly

If there are any issues with the firmware update, you may wish to connect to the reader directly instead of connecting through the TCU.

Direct Serial Connection:

You can connect to an LRU1002 or a CPR74 RFID Reader with a Serial Connection.

• Locate the Serial Cable connecting your reader to the GlueLogix machine.
  
• Disconnect your reader from the GlueLogix system and connect it to your PC with a USB-to-Serial adapter.
• If you are unsure what COM port you are using, open Device Manager, click on Ports, and plug/unplug your reader.
• Open FEIG ISOStart software.
• Note: You do NOT have to go through the process of opening LineLogixPC and lining up the reader with the TCU.
• Click Detect to open the Detect a Reader window. Select the same settings as the image above (COM-Port communication, correct COM Port number, DTR on, BusAdr = 255)
• Click Run without change and continue following the steps below.

Direct USB Connection:

This section is for LRU1002 Readers only. The CPR74 does not have an easily-accessible USB connection. LRU1002 can connect via Serial or USB, but the USB connection is much faster.

• Locate the USB port on the front left-hand side of the LRU1002. If it is a newer model with a micro-USB, you might need to remove a rubber dust cap.
• Open FEIG ISOStart software
  
• Connect the PC to the LRU1002 with a USB cable.
• The reader should automatically connect via USB. Follow the next section to update your firmware, but when you open the Firmware Update Tool, select USB instead of COM-Port communication, as in the following image:

Note: If you cannot connect to your LRU1002 with USB, your reader may not be configured properly. You can either switch to a Serial Connection (with a USB-to-Serial adapter) or reconfigure your reader.
To check USB configuration via the Serial interface, connect ISO Start+ as shown above, and follow the next figure:

• Set ISO Start+ View to Physical
• In the Config tree, select CFG1
• Make sure USB is set along with RS232
• If not, set it, then (orange boxes)
• select EEPROM at the right, and
• click Write

• Procure a new firmware version from GlueLogix.
• Download the .zip file and extract it.
  
• When you connect to a reader with the Detect a Reader dialog, ISOStart will automatically read the configurations and display the firmware version. You can also manually run the [0x66] Get Reader Info command.

• Check your firmware version. If your reader needs an update, you should have received a file from GlueLogix that is a later version than your current firmware. In this example we will update from version 1.7.0 to 1.10.129.
• Click Firmware Update icon in the leftmost side of the screen to open the Firmware Update Tool. Repeat the same steps for the Detect a Reader window (COM-Port communication, correct COM Port number, DTR on, BusAdr = 255)

• Click Detect. Your reader should appear. Select it and click Next.
• The next window will ask for a Firmware Update File. Click Select Path and navigate to where you have saved the update from GlueLogix. Make sure it is unzipped! The Firmware Update Tool will not look inside ZIP files for the code. Your file should look similar to the following:
  

• Select your update and click Next.
• Confirm your update in the next window, and click Next again. Then click Start Update to begin updating reader firmware.
  

• The update process may take a few minutes, including a final reboot of your reader. If the update fails, it will automatically restart and try again. Do not close the window or ISOStart software while update is in progress.
  
• After update and reboot, click Finish.
  
• Run the [0x66 Get Reader Info] command again. Now the reader should be running the new firmware version.
